HDD Repair – Most Common Faults and Solutions

Looking for hard drive repair? In most cases, it's not about repairing the drive – it's about recovering your data. We'll explain the difference, what to do first and when to contact a professional lab.

What to do immediately when your drive fails

  • Turn off the device – disconnect the computer, laptop or external drive from power. Every second of running a damaged drive can make the situation worse.
  • Stay calm – in most cases data recovery is possible, as long as the media isn't further damaged.
  • Don't reconnect the drive – repeated attempts to power on are the most common reason a solvable problem becomes unsolvable.
  • Contact us – +420 608 177 773 – we'll advise you over the phone. Free diagnostics and pickup across the Czech Republic and by arrangement from other EU countries.

Drive repair vs. data recovery – what's the difference

Most people searching for "HDD repair" actually need data recovery. These are two different things:

Drive repair means restoring the drive to a working state so it functions as before. With modern hard drives suffering mechanical failure, this is almost always impossible – damaged read/write heads, a seized motor or scratched platters cannot be reliably repaired for continued safe use. The exception is simple faults like a broken USB connector on an external drive or a damaged electronics board.

Data recovery means extracting your files from the damaged drive onto new, working media. The original drive is no longer used. In most cases, this is exactly what you need – not a repaired drive, but your data back.

What not to do – most common mistakes

  • Don't reconnect the drive repeatedly – if the drive clicks, knocks or won't spin, every power-on worsens the damage. Damaged read/write heads can scratch the platters where your data is stored.
  • Don't use software on a mechanically damaged drive – no program can fix faulty heads or a seized motor. Software only helps with logical issues on an otherwise functional drive.
  • Don't open the drive – a hard drive requires an ISO Class 5 cleanroom environment. A single dust particle on the platter can destroy your data.
  • Don't put the drive in a freezer – an old internet myth that in practice causes condensation and corrosion inside the drive.

Frequently asked questions

Can a hard drive be repaired after a fall?

Repaired to work reliably again – in most cases no. But data can be recovered from it with a high success rate. After a fall, the read/write heads are usually damaged, requiring replacement in a cleanroom followed by reading data with specialized tools. The sooner the drive reaches a lab without further power-on attempts, the higher the chance of success.

How long does data recovery from a damaged HDD take?

It depends on the type and extent of damage and on the chosen priority level. We offer express service for urgent cases. We'll provide a precise estimate after free diagnostics.

How much does data recovery from a damaged drive cost?

The price depends on the type of fault. You'll receive an exact quote after diagnostics, which is free and non-binding. You only pay for successfully recovered data. For indicative pricing see our price list. For detailed information about HDD data recovery visit the main service page.
