What is data recovery

Data recovery is the process of retrieving lost, inaccessible, or damaged data from storage media. The cause may be a hardware failure, file system corruption, accidental deletion, water damage, a physical impact, or a power surge – each scenario requires a different approach. Professional data recovery demands specialised equipment, a clean working environment, and in-depth knowledge of the internal structures of each media type.

Data recovery from physically damaged media cannot be performed with software tools alone – it requires hardware-level access to firmware, controllers, and, in the case of mechanically damaged hard drives, work with internal components in a clean workspace.

When you need professional data recovery

Not every data loss requires a visit to a laboratory – but even a seemingly simple problem can be more complex than it appears. Modern SSDs, SMR hard drives, and other media run internal processes (Trim, background data rewriting) that can irreversibly reduce the chances of successful recovery, even when the device appears to be working normally. If the medium shows any physical symptoms of failure – clicking sounds, not being recognised by the system, physical impact, or water damage – do not attempt any further recovery on your own. Every unprofessional intervention can make the situation worse, in some cases permanently. We recommend consulting a specialist first.

Professional data recovery is needed in particular when:

  • A hard drive is mechanically damaged – drop, impact, clicking, unusual sounds
  • Electronics have failed – power surge, short circuit, lightning damage
  • Firmware or service area failure – the drive behaves abnormally or is not correctly detected
  • An SSD or flash device is damaged – controller failure, NAND chip damage
  • A RAID array or NAS has failed – multiple drive failure, array degradation, corrupted configuration
  • A mobile phone is damaged – non-functional display, oxidation, motherboard failure
  • Fire, flood, or natural disaster

What media we recover data from

Our laboratory covers the full range of storage media. Each type requires a different approach, different tools, and different expertise. That is why we maintain specialised workstations and equipment for each category.

Hard drives (HDD)

Hard drive data recovery remains a substantial part of our work. We handle head failures, motor issues, electronics (PCB) damage, service area corruption, and damaged platter surfaces. We work with all brands and models, including older types. We keep most spare parts in stock.

SSD

SSD data recovery requires work at the controller and NAND chip level. We handle firmware failures, damaged controllers, defective NAND chips, and issues caused by the Trim function. We work with internal and external SSDs across all common interfaces – SATA, M.2, NVMe, mSATA.

RAID and NAS

RAID and NAS data recovery is among the most complex work in our field. It requires knowledge of RAID configurations, specific file systems (EXT4, Btrfs, ZFS, XFS), and the ability to work with multiple drives simultaneously. We handle multi-drive failures, array degradation, rebuild errors, and NAS device failures.

Flash drives and memory cards

With flash media, we deal with controller failures, NAND chip damage, mechanical connector damage, and file system-level issues. In more severe cases, we read data directly from the NAND chips using specialised equipment.

USB flash drives | Memory cards

Mobile phones and tablets

Mobile device data recovery is a specialised discipline. We handle motherboard failures, oxidation, mechanical damage, broken displays, and operating system issues. We work with both Android and iOS (Apple) devices.

Our equipment and technology

The quality of data recovery services depends on the laboratory's equipment and the experience of its technicians. At our Prague laboratory, we work with professional-grade tools that rank among the best in the industry:

  • ACELab PC-3000 – a professional platform for hardware-level diagnostics and data recovery from HDDs, SSDs, and drives from RAID arrays and NAS systems, used by leading data recovery laboratories worldwide
  • NAND chip reading equipment – for reading data directly from NAND memory chips in SSDs, flash drives, and memory cards
  • Soldering and BGA rework stations – for micro-soldering and chip-level component replacement
  • Microscopes and diagnostic instruments – for precise damage analysis
  • Clean working environment – essential for safe work with opened hard drives

We continuously modernise and expand our equipment. Investing in professional tools and ongoing training is a given – data recovery is a field where technology evolves constantly, and standing still means falling behind.

How to choose a data recovery company

Several companies offer data recovery services. However, the quality of those services can vary significantly. When choosing a data recovery provider, we recommend verifying the following:

In-house laboratory and equipment

The key question: does the company have its own laboratory with professional equipment, or does it act as an intermediary, forwarding media elsewhere? Data recovery through a third party means longer processing times, less control over the process, and greater risk to your data. Ask about the specific equipment the company uses and verify that the company confirms all work is performed on-site – that no media is sent elsewhere.

Transparent pricing

A trustworthy data recovery company provides indicative pricing upfront and gives an exact quote after a free diagnostic assessment. The price should not come as a "surprise" after the work is done. Be cautious of unusually low prices, which may be a pretext for later increases, as well as disproportionately high prices without corresponding technical capabilities.

Clear identity and track record

Check how long the company has been operating, what its registered business name is, and where it is based. Is this information easy to find? Does the company have a real physical address where its laboratory is actually located? A legitimate data recovery company has no reason to operate under an unclear or frequently changing identity.

Verifiable tool manufacturer partnerships

Some companies claim partnerships with hard drive manufacturers or other equipment makers. These claims can be verified directly on the manufacturers' websites – authorised partners are typically listed there. If a claimed partnership cannot be found on the manufacturer's website, caution is warranted.

Free diagnostics and fair terms

A professional data recovery company offers free diagnostics and does not charge for unsuccessful recovery attempts. You only pay for successfully recovered data. Data protection and the option to sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) are also important considerations.

How data recovery works at our laboratory

The entire process is designed to be as straightforward for you as possible, while keeping your data safe:

1. Consultation and media handover

Call or write to us. We will discuss your problem and recommend the next steps. You can bring the media in person to our laboratory in Prague, or use our free pickup service across the Czech Republic. By arrangement, we also handle pickups from other EU countries.

2. Free diagnostics

After receiving the media, we perform a diagnostic assessment to determine the extent of damage, the chances of successful recovery, and the exact price. Diagnostics are free and non-binding – if you decide not to proceed, we will return the media. Only return shipping is charged.

3. Data recovery

Once you approve the quote, we begin recovery work. You can check the status of your case at any time by phone or email. Express processing is available if needed.

4. Handover of recovered data

We deliver the recovered data on a medium of your choice. You only pay for successfully recovered data.

Data recovery pricing overview

The cost of data recovery depends on the media type, the extent of damage, and the complexity of the intervention. We always provide the exact price after a free diagnostic assessment. Generally, prices start from CZK 1,500 (approx. EUR 60) for simpler cases such as deleted files or file system failures. Diagnostics are always free, and you only pay for successfully recovered data.

Frequently asked questions – Data Recovery

How much does data recovery cost?

The price depends on the media type and the extent of damage. It starts from CZK 1,500 (approx. EUR 60) for simpler software-level cases. We provide the exact price after a free diagnostic assessment. You only pay for successful recovery – if we cannot recover the data, you pay nothing.

How long does data recovery take?

Processing time varies case by case. Simpler software-level cases can be completed within hours. Complex hardware interventions, particularly with mechanically damaged hard drives, may take several weeks. Express processing is available. We provide a time estimate after diagnostics.

Can I try to recover the data myself using software?

It depends on the situation. If there are any signs of hardware failure – unusual sounds, the device is not recognised, physical damage – we strongly advise against attempting recovery on your own. It can make the situation irreversibly worse. Even in seemingly simple cases (deleted files, formatted drive), it is important to know that modern SSDs, SMR drives, and certain other media handle data internally in ways that are not visible to the user. Functions such as Trim or background data rewriting can reduce the chances of successful recovery with every passing minute. We recommend calling for a free consultation before attempting any self-recovery – it may save you significant complications.

How can I tell if a data recovery company has a real laboratory?

Check what specific equipment the company uses and whether it confirms that all work is performed on its own premises. See if the company is listed as a partner or user of professional tools (such as ACELab) – this can usually be verified directly on the tool manufacturer's website. Also pay attention to whether the company can describe specific procedures and technologies, or whether it responds only with generic phrases.

Is my data safe with you?

We treat every case with the utmost discretion. We sign non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) upon request. After a case is completed, we securely erase the data from our working media. Only the technician assigned to your case has access to your data.

Do you accept media from outside the Czech Republic?

Yes. By arrangement, we handle pickups from other EU countries. You can also ship the media to our laboratory in Prague directly. Contact us to discuss logistics and shipping options for your location.
